Fairbanks Names 2015 Richard M. Fairbanks Circle of Hope Award Recipient
March 19, 2015
Fairbanks is pleased to present the 2015 Richard M. Fairbanks Circle of Hope Award to Arden G. Christen, D.D.S., M.S.D., M.A. This prestigious award honors an individual or organization for outstanding contributions related to research, education or treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. This year, we recognize Dr. Christen for participating in tobacco related research, educating the community and healthcare providers on the importance of tobacco cessation and actively helping people who struggle with nicotine dependence.
Dr. Christen is a professor emeritus in the oral biology department at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. Over the last 45 years, he has worked diligently to promote smoking cessation throughout the state and nationally. Dr. Christen was a trailblazer in making oral health a focal point in the battle against tobacco use. As a former smoker, Dr. Christen became interested in tobacco cessation after seeing many of his dental patients suffer from serious dental and medical conditions related to their tobacco addiction.
In 2004, Dr. Christen developed the Indiana University Nicotine Dependence Program at Fairbanks to provide resources to help people achieve their goals of becoming tobacco free. Nationally, he has served as a tobacco cessation expert to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Office and the Veteran’s Administration.
He has received multiple professional awards over his long career including a 2006 Lifetime Award for Distinguished Service from the Indiana Public Health Foundation, Inc., for contributions to tobacco cessation programs in Indiana. He continues working with the Indiana University Tobacco Cessation and Biobehavioral Group on the IUPUI campus.
Dr. Christen retired as a Colonel from the United States Air Force Dental Corps after 24 years of active duty. From 1980 to 2004, Dr. Christen became a fulltime dental school faculty member at Indiana University, serving twice as a department chair. Dr. Christen and his wife, Joan, have four daughters. In September, they will celebrate 60 years of marriage.
We will honor Dr. Christen at the Circle of Hope Dinner on Thursday, April 23. Visit www.fairbankscd.org/coh for more information about the event!
