Excessive alcohol use is often initiated for its pleasurable effects, or “reward,” but with time, leads to long-term changes in brain function that involves an abnormal activation of brain stress systems, and drinking for “relief.” This lecture will review the emerging neurobiology and molecular genetics of such mechanisms, and illustrate how this knowledge can be used to guide treatment development. |

This presentation will review the research support for the use of incentives in alcohol and drug treatment as well as associated best practices and recommendations. Participants will consider the opportunities and challenges of furthering the use of incentives at their agency. Practical considerations and research findings will be discussed with regard to an on-going Fairbanks Hospital study. Specifically, participants will examine the impact of incentives on Fairbanks IOP graduates outcomes and on-going involvement with recovery management supports. |
