The Substance-Impacted Students and the School Project
Fairbanks and partners launched the Substance-Impacted Students and the School Project in response to growing number of substance-impacted children who are in need of specialized attention and education. This initiative provides public awareness sessions to demonstrate the academic behavioral and school-readiness needs of substance impacted (SI) students. Various partnerships and collaborations that are aimed to help children will be investigated by experts and focus groups.
A field study completed by Dr. Sig Zielke, clinical specialist at Fairbanks, captured the struggles of local educators with the substance-impacted (SI) student's overall school performance. Teachers and administrators noted that many SI students lacked consistent adult care and came to school with several deficits. Too often, these children were unable to follow instructions, could not adequately self-regulate, or make sense out of what they were being taught
The Substance-Impacted Students and the School Project will lead to a better understanding by schools and child-serving agencies of how to recognize and address the particular academic, behavioral and school readiness problems of SI students.
