The Recovery High School at Fairbanks receives final approval from City-County Council
INDIANAPOLIS - On October 10, Fairbanks received final approval from the City-County Council for its charter school application. This was the first unanimous vote in favor of a charter school proposal.
"Opening a school for recovering adolescents has been a dream of mine for the past 10 years," said Rachelle Gardner, director of adolescent services at Fairbanks. "It is very encouraging to see how much the community supports Fairbanks and what we do."
"Supporting the efforts of a child in recovery goes beyond the individual or their family," said Helene Cross, president and CEO of Fairbanks. "That support must create a path within our community that includes education, employment and the ability to reach adulthood armed with the tools for self-sufficiency. We feel strongly that a recovery high school can do just that."
Currently, the prognosis for alcohol or drug abusing adolescents, even those who complete treatment, is poor with relapse rates ranging from 35 to 85 percent. For adolescents, the school environment contributes to this rate of relapse.
Recovery High School at Fairbanks will be a school for adolescents in grades 9 to 12 who are committed to recovery. It is modeled after other recovery high schools, such as Sobriety High, which currently has three campuses throughout Minnesota. The school will provide students with a quality and successful high school experience focusing on academic excellence, while encouraging them to build positive relationships with families, peers and communities that will enable them to remain drug and alcohol free.
The Recovery High School at Fairbanks will open in August 2006.
