Fairbanks receives $500,000 grant from The Kresge Foundation
and completes $6.7 million Capital Campaign

INDIANAPOLIS - Fairbanks alcohol and drug addiction treatment center has received a $500,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation and successfully ended a $6.7 million capital campaign. The funds raised supported building the Fairbanks Recovery Center as well as the Adolescent Transitional Living unit expansion.

"Our Trustees were impressed by Fairbanks' emphasis on long-term recovery and support," said Rip Rapson, president of The Kresge Foundation. "Through education and advocacy, Fairbanks works to increase resources for treatment and recovery as well as eliminating the discrimination and stigma pervasive in this area."

The following organizations were major campaign donors:

  • Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation, Inc.
  • United Way of Central Indiana Capital Project Fund
  • The Indianapolis Foundation, an affiliate of the Central Indiana Community Foundation
  • Ruth Lilly Philanthropic Foundation
  • Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust
"This is a fundraising milestone for Fairbanks," said Helene Cross, president and CEO of Fairbanks. "We are grateful to The Kresge Foundation and to our very generous community. We are most honored to dedicate our new facility to the memory of Richard M. Fairbanks."

In 2001, the Fairbanks Board of Directors expanded the mission of Fairbanks to include a focus on recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Research shows that the best strategy for long-term recovery for persons with the chronic disease of drug or alcohol addiction is treatment, followed by recovery management, education and ongoing support. In order to achieve this goal, Fairbanks launched a capital campaign which included building a 36,000 square-foot recovery center.

The new Fairbanks Recovery Center houses outpatient addiction programming, recovery management services and programs, a volunteer-supported coffee shop and Hope Academy, the recovery high school at Fairbanks.

The Kresge Foundation is a $3 billion national foundation that seeks to build stronger nonprofit organizations. It concentrates its programming on capital campaigns as a key opportunity for nonprofit growth. Its Capital Challenge Grant Program has helped communities across the country build libraries, schools, hospitals, museums, community centers and food banks.

Fairbanks' success in treating individuals and their families has had a far-reaching impact on lives. Families once broken apart now look to the future with hope. Please visit www.fairbankscd.org for more information.
