Kresge Foundation awards $500,000 to Fairbanks

INDIANAPOLIS - Fairbanks, alcohol and drug treatment facility was awarded a $500,000 Capital Challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation. With a capital campaign goal of $6.6 million, Fairbanks has $1 million left to raise for the Fairbanks Recovery Center.

With the grant, Kresge issued Fairbanks a challenge to help leverage support from new donors and to solicit higher levels of giving from past contributors. Fairbanks must raise $1 million by January 2009 to receive the $500,000 Kresge grant. The Jacob G. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank has already stepped in to assist Fairbanks by giving a gift of $40,000 toward the challenge.

"The Kresge Foundation believes that a capital campaign can do more than build a building," said Helene Cross, president and CEO of Fairbanks. "It can strengthen an organization, fuel its growth, and extend and enrich the connections that make it effective and sustainable in the community. We are very grateful for this gift."

The Fairbanks Recovery Center houses outpatient addiction programming, recovery management services, a volunteer-supported coffee shop and Hope Academy, the recovery high school at Fairbanks.

The Kresge Foundation is a $3 billion national foundation that seeks to build stronger nonprofit organizations. It concentrates its programming on capital campaigns as a key opportunity for nonprofit growth. Its Capital Challenge Grant Program has helped communities across the country build libraries, schools, hospitals, museums, community centers and food banks.

Fairbanks is a nonprofit organization that focuses on recovery from alcohol and drug problems. Since 1945, the organization has helped to improve the well-being of individuals, families and communities by offering hope and support through its programs and services.
